The Evolution of Initial Charms

by David on September 19, 2011

Charms, charm bracelets and charm necklaces have been around for eons.  Even in prehistoric times, charms were worn to pacify certain superstitions and beliefs.  Some charms were warn to fend off evil or misfortune or disease.  Some charms were worn by warriors to ensure victory in battle.  Charms were worn by pregnant women to ensure an easy delivery and a healthy child.  Charms for children kept them safe and free of childhood diseases.  Some charms were made to protect and nurture crops, some brought the rain while others drove off intrusive insects and blight.  Many charms were crafted to keep evil spirits at bay, while others kept angels close at hand.  The evolution of initial charms is a fairly recent tradition as compared to the centuries old origin of charms themselves, but even as such, initial charms have been around for generations – since the birth of language, really.  Today, however, charms can be found crafted of the finest silver, gold and just about any other precious metal you would find in jewelry as well as adorned with precious and semi-precious gemstones, hand crafted, custom glass, leather, silk … you name it.  Today’s charms tend to be much more aesthetically appealing than the bone and clay versions from eons past, but their popularity, meaning, and sometimes even spiritual attachment remains very much the same.

There are charms for virtually every occasion you can imagine.  The birth of a baby.  A marriage.  An anniversary.  A birthday.  A graduation.  1st love.  Holidays.  Special friendships.  Hobbies.  Special interests.  There are special charms for moms, grandmas, aunts, sisters, sweethearts, children, pets.  Charms are available in many forms and many styles, and initial charms add that extra personalized touch to any already meaningful charm, whether for your own charm bracelet or necklace, or as a gift to someone special.

The Versatility of Initial Charms

Initial charms are most commonly worn on charm bracelets or charm necklaces, but they’re actually much more versatile than that.  Initial charms can be attached to a key chain, a tie clip, a belt buckle, a brooch.  You can attach initial charms to a pet collar or use them to adorn a special picture frame.  Convert them into wine glass charms or Christmas tree ornaments if you have a little arts and crafts ability.  These are just a few of the “out of the box” ideas you might use to keep your initial charms in a place where you will see them and appreciate them most often.

Initial charms are also more than just a letter on display.  Initials can be added to charms and pendants of all shapes and sizes.  Similarly, gemstones and other adornments can be added to the metal casting of the initial standing on its own.  The choices available for unique initial charms are practically endless, allowing you to find or create a charm that is truly individual for yourself or that special someone.  The gift of initial charms is as timeless as history itself.
